Vanessa adds all the kitchen knives to her dad’s suitcase when he’s in the bathroom. She doesn’t cry when the taxi pulls away: she knows how airports work. There’s no way they’ll let him leave. She ignores her mother’s worried glances, and sits by the window to wait.


J Adamthwaite is a Lancaster-based writer with an interest in magical realism. She loves sensory writing that explores the beauty in the mundane and finds the every-day details we forget to see.

She writes fiction ranging from the short to the very short, and is currently seeking representation for her first novel. Her current writing project is audio-drama series, The Family Tree, for which she is a writer and producer.
